Conserving Liberia's forest - PLEASE READ
Posted By Will on July 22 2010

Its not often that Atlantic Rising plugs a cause other than its own.  However, the time has come to get behind a project that can make a real difference to the troubled country of Liberia.  And we need a tiny bit of your time to make it possible.

A close friend of Atlantic Rising - Catriona Forbes - works for an architectural NGO called Article 25. As a qualified architect, Catriona has been offered the chance to lead a project to design vital infrastructure and buildings in the Gola Forest - West Africa's last virgin rainforest.  This project will provide employment opportunities in conservation and eco-tourism for people who otherwise have little incentive to conserve the forest.  For more information click here.

We cannot miss out on this opportunity.

The Gola forest has been subjected to rampant deforestation in the years since the civil wars ended in Liberia and Sierra Leone.  The indigenous chimpanzee and red colobus monkey are now threatened, as is the existence of a unique ecosystem.  But beyond this, the Gola forest has come to symbolise the fragile peace which now exists between Sierra Leone and Liberia.  Presidents of both countries recently designated part of the forest as a Peace Park - a symbol to show a new dawn in Sierra Leone / Liberia relations.

The reason that we need your help is because Catriona has been shortlisted for a scholarship which will pay for her position whilst in Liberia.  Having battled her way through to the final stages, she has now been subjected to an online vote via facebook.  There are three other people involved, but we HAVE to ensure that Catriona wins.

So click on this link: http://www.facebook.com/worldofdifference?v=app_20678178440&ref=ts

Vote for Catriona and then pass this link onto everybody else you know.  We only have until the end of this week, so need to get the ball rolling quickly.

Many thanks.

Will, Lynn and Tim
