Competition News

26th July 2010:  The "My Coastal Life" Photography competition has ended.

We challenged students around the Atlantic Ocean to take a single photo of a coastal scene and send it to us along with 50 words explaining its importance to them.

We are now building a giant inter-active map which students can use to explore different perspectives on life around the ocean rim.

Explorer and photographer Martin Hartley is currently choosing the winner

Project Aims

'Why should I care about climate change?' seems to be the question we are most frequently asked when we visit schools.

Our schools network aims to answer that question by giving human faces to remote people and an immediacy to distant places.

Our work enables pupils to build friendships around the ocean and learn from each other through collaborative projects.

Many pupils involved in the network live in communities under direct threat  from sea level rise.  Our project allows these people to have a presence in classrooms all around the ocean, opening pupils' eyes to the different experiences of climate change.

"More and more history becomes a battle between education and catastrophe" - H G Wells

How does it work?

Our network is a community of  English speaking schools from communities below the 1m contour line. It is hosted by rafi.ki, an online education community.

We are visiting every school in the network, holding workshops on climate change and the Atlantic community, and doing film and photographic work.  We set up each pupil on rafi.ki, where they  have their own profile page. Throughout 2010 we are producing educational projects  encouraging collaboration within the network.

What is rafi.ki?

Rafi.ki is an online educational community with a network of over 1,200 schools in 100 countries.

They allow students and teachers to communicate with other schools in a secure way using email, web forums and video conferencing.  This brings an immediacy to issues  that would previously have seemed abstract and distant for students.
